Suggested article: What is IMAP?
IMAP is a short acronym that stands for Internet Message Access Protocol, and it is one of the most popular protocols for receiving email messages from a mail server over a TCP/IP connection.
It was developed by Mark Crispin back in 1986 as a remote access mailbox protocol. At present days we are using IMAP4 which is the latest version of the protocol.
As an incoming email protocol, IMAP completes its function in the middle of the email server and the email client. So that way, when a user wants to view and read a received email, it reads it off the server.
The user is not downloading or storing the particular email on a local device. That allows access from any location and from any devices like laptops, smartphones, and tablets.
